Challenge:

Investigate the soil in your own backyard! Fall is a great time to see the process of soil-making in action. Can you find any insects that might be shredding the fallen leaves into smaller pieces to make it easier for the microbes to decompose them? Can you find signs of decomposers, like fungal mushrooms or mold? Any wiggling worms beneath the surface? Take pictures and let us know what you found! Wondering what you saw? Try using the iNaturalist App to help identify your creatures in question.

Bonus Challenge: Fallen leaves are an incredibly important habitat and food source for all the organisms of the soil food web. Spread the word to your friends and family that the best thing they can do to support the beneficial organisms living in their soil is to “Leave the Leaves”!
