Meet the Expert: Dr. Katie Lotterhos, Marine biologist and ecologist

Dr. Katie Lotterhos

Dr. Katie Lotterhos is an Associate Professor of Marine and Environmental Sciences at Northeastern University. She received her B.A. in Physics from Binghamton University in Physics, but late in her degree discovered her love for the ocean through trips with the outdoors club. She learned how to dive during travels in Belize and Hondurus, and then later went on to become a Science Diver through Shoals Marine Lab in Maine. After a few years working in marine research in New Zealand, Katie went on to earn her PhD from Florida State University in Biological Science, with a specialization in marine biology and genetics. Katie and her lab studies how the ocean climate is changing, and the role of genetics in determining which animals can survive that change. You can learn more about Dr. Katie’s work  HERE

Challenge:

Develop a system to measure as many traits as you can using building blocks or legos, ie. how tall it is, how many sides it has, it’s color, how many sections it has, etc.

Then have your parents or someone else select a group of blocks that have all of the same trait, and see if you can figure it out.
