Episode 17: How Can We Protect Sea Turtle Nests?

Meet the Expert:  Carlee Jackson, Marine Turtle Specialist

Originally from Detroit, MI, Carlee moved to Florida and received my Bachelor’s of Science in Biology at Florida Atlantic University in 2016. She is currently  a Marine Turtle Specialist at Gumbo Limbo Nature center, where she helps monitor sea turtle nesting activity along the beaches of Boca Raton. She also helps in the sea turtle hospital, helping to rehabilitate patients so they can be released back into the ocean. This summer she completed her master’s in marine science from Nova Southeastern University, where her Master’s thesis research focused on looking at the effects of feeding tourism on nurse sharks in Belize. Additionally, she is a co-founder of an organization named Minorities in Shark Science, where their goal is to increase and promote diversity in the field of shark and marine science.

As a beacon for environmental education, research, and conservation, Gumbo Limbo’s 20 acres on the protected barrier island provide refuge to many varieties of plants and animals – some rare or endangered. It also represents a commitment to protect our natural resources by our staff, volunteers, and the organizations that comprise the Center.
